Operating expenses climbed 9.9% to $889.5 million from $809.1 million in the first quarter of 2025. Labor and related expenses drove the increase, rising 11.9% to $422.1 million from $377.3 million. The company's tax expense dropped to $6.1 million from $20.2 million, contributing to the net income improvement.
Diluted earnings per share reached $2.50, up from $2.42 a year earlier, on a diluted share count of 40.7 million versus 41.6 million. Basic earnings per share came in at $2.54 compared to $2.48 in Q1 2025.
Cash flow from operations declined 16% to $144.5 million from $171.0 million. The company deployed $82.8 million for investing activities, up from $66.1 million, while cash used in financing activities fell to $118.5 million from $153.3 million. Cash and cash equivalents dropped sharply to $65.8 million as of March 31, 2026, down from $122.7 million at year-end 2025 and $179.0 million a year earlier.
Total assets stood at $7.35 billion as of quarter-end, down slightly from $7.39 billion at December 31, 2025. Property, plant and equipment rose to $5.90 billion from $5.84 billion. Long-term debt decreased to $1.80 billion from $1.85 billion at year-end, while total stockholders' equity slipped to $2.73 billion from $2.75 billion.
Current liabilities declined to $1.63 billion from $1.67 billion, driven by a decrease in overall current obligations despite accounts payable rising to $652.5 million from $633.6 million. The company's total debt burden stood at $2.39 billion, essentially flat from $2.39 billion at the end of 2025.
